Senate Passes Controversial $895 Billion Defense Bill with Bipartisan Support

The Senate passed the $895 billion National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) by a vote of 85-14, despite controversy over a provision banning Tricare coverage for gender-affirming care for the transgender children of military members under 18. While Democrats led by Sen. Tammy Baldwin tried unsuccessfully to remove the language, bipartisan negotiations resulted in a bill that many view as imperfect but necessary. House Speaker Mike Johnson emphasized the bill's focus on military priorities, while critics like Rep. Adam Smith argued that the provision harms military families and could force service members to leave the military to access necessary healthcare for their children.

United Front Work Department Sparks Espionage Allegations in the West

China’s United Front Work Department (UFWD), a key tool of the Chinese Communist Party, is increasingly accused of espionage and foreign influence activities. Allegations include targeting overseas Chinese communities, shaping narratives on sensitive issues, and pressuring critics abroad. While cases like those of businessman Yang Tengbo and lawyer Christine Lee highlight concerns, critics argue that aggressive measures risk alienating ethnic Chinese communities. Governments like the U.S. and Australia are adopting stricter laws, but experts warn against racial profiling that could amplify Beijing’s propaganda and undermine trust with Chinese diasporas.
