Bird Flu Virus in Louisiana Patient Shows Mutations Concerning to CDC

A Louisiana patient, the first in the U.S. to develop severe illness from bird flu, showed signs of virus mutations that may enhance its ability to bind to human airway receptors, according to the CDC. Although concerning, experts, including Michael Osterholm of the University of Minnesota, stress that these changes do not indicate a significant risk of human-to-human transmission at this stage. The patient, over 65 with underlying health issues, contracted the virus after exposure to sick birds and remains the only known case without further transmission. The CDC emphasized the low public risk but highlighted the need for continued monitoring of viral mutations as potential pandemic threats loom.

BYU Football Surges in Transfer Portal to Offset Recruiting Concerns

BYU football is making significant strides in the transfer portal, bolstering its roster with top-tier talent to build on its recent success. Despite initial disappointment in recruiting rankings, the Cougars have secured three impactful players: Texas EDGE Tausili Akana, Utah de-commit Hunter Clegg, and Michigan O-Lineman Andrew Gentry. Akana, a Utah native and former 6A player of the year, brings a fierce presence to the defensive line. Clegg, another four-star Utah talent, strengthens BYU's defense after returning from his mission. Gentry, with experience at Michigan, provides veteran skill to the offensive line. These additions promise an exciting future for BYU football.
