Unusual Event: Nine Beavers Found Dead in Utah Counties Due to Tularemia
Nine beavers were found dead in Summit, Wasatch, and Utah counties in Utah due to tularemia, a disease spreadable to humans caused by a bacteria. The Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) considers this event "unusual." Tularemia can be transmitted through tick or deerfly bites, direct contact with infected animals, or ingestion of contaminated water or meat. Humans are susceptible to tularemia, typically through tick or deerfly bites or handling infected animals. The DWR advises precautions such as wearing protective clothing and using insect repellent. Reporting dead rodents to the DWR is recommended. The last confirmed case of tularemia killing wildlife in Utah was in 2017.
