Samantha Corey's Story: A High School Senior Battling Cancer
Samantha Corey, a Utah high school senior who passed away from cancer just before her graduation, will not be recognized at her school's graduation ceremony due to a district policy. Despite earning enough credits to graduate before her death, the school district has declined to include her name or acknowledge her during the ceremony. The decision has saddened classmates and community members, leading to an online petition urging the district to reconsider. While the district cites policy guidelines, Samantha's family and supporters hope to find alternative ways to honor her memory.

Tribal Ban: Crow Creek Sioux Tribe Prohibits Governor Noem from Reservation
The Crow Creek Sioux Tribe in South Dakota has become the seventh Native American tribe to ban Governor Kristi Noem from its reservation. This decision follows Noem's earlier comments accusing tribal leaders of benefiting from drug cartels. The tribe cited these remarks as derogatory and disrespectful. Noem's assertion that tribal leaders personally benefit from cartels has been refuted by tribal representatives, who emphasized the governor's ignorance on the issue. Despite the bans, Noem stands by her comments and calls for tribal cooperation in combating cartels.

Orca Attack: Pod Sinks Yacht in the Strait of Gibraltar
A pod of killer whales attacked and sank a 50-foot yacht named The Alboran Cognac in the Strait of Gibraltar. The incident occurred while the vessel was 15 miles from Cabo Espartel in Morocco, with two people on board. Despite alerting authorities, the yacht could not be salvaged. Orca attacks on boats have become increasingly common, with approximately 700 incidents reported since 2020. The reasons behind these attacks remain unclear, though experts speculate that orcas may perceive boats as threats or engage in the behavior for sport. This incident adds to a series of interactions between orcas and vessels in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Galician coast, posing risks to maritime activities in the region.

Discovery of SPECULOOS-3 b: A New Earth-Sized Planet
Astronomers have discovered a new Earth-sized planet, SPECULOOS-3 b, orbiting an ultra-cool red dwarf star just 55 light years away. This planet is only the second of its kind found around this type of star and orbits its host star in approximately 17 hours. Due to likely tidal locking, one side of the planet always faces the star, resulting in endless days and nights. The discovery was made by the SPECULOOS project, which aims to find exoplanets around ultra-cool dwarf stars using a network of telescopes. SPECULOOS-3 b's properties make it an ideal target for further study, potentially including observations by the James Webb Space Telescope to learn more about its composition and atmosphere.
