Netanyahu Moves to Dismiss Shin Bet Director Amid Growing Tensions

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced plans to dismiss Ronen Bar, the director of Shin Bet, citing "ongoing distrust" in his leadership. Bar, appointed in 2021, has criticized Netanyahu's government, arguing that political leadership ignored warnings before the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack. Israel’s Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara has pushed back, stating that Netanyahu lacks authority to fire Bar without further review, citing concerns over illegality and conflict of interest. Meanwhile, Justice Minister Yariv Levin insists the government has the legal power to remove Bar. The move comes as Shin Bet investigates ties between Netanyahu’s office and Qatari officials, raising suspicions of political motives behind the dismissal attempt.
