Utah Issues Warning Against Swimming in Sand Hollow Reservoir
The Utah Department of Environmental Quality has issued an advisory warning people against swimming in Sand Hollow Reservoir due to harmful algae mats. These mats, which can appear as green, brown, or black, mucous-like patches, produce toxins that can be dangerous to humans and animals. The advisory recommends avoiding swimming, water skiing, and any activity that involves submerging your head in affected areas. Pet owners should also keep their dogs away, and anglers are advised to thoroughly clean any fish caught in the reservoir. Updates and new advisories can be monitored, and reports can be directed to Utah Poison Control.

Key Bridge Collapse Prompts $102M Settlement from Ship Operators
The operators of the Dali vessel, Grace Ocean Private Limited and Synergy Marine Private Limited, have agreed to pay nearly $102 million to cover federal response costs after their ship collided with Baltimore’s Key Bridge in March, causing the bridge to collapse and killing six workers. The civil settlement does not address the reconstruction costs, estimated between $1.7 and $1.9 billion, which are being pursued separately on behalf of Maryland. The crash blocked entry to the Port of Baltimore for weeks, leading to a complex cleanup involving multiple agencies. A separate criminal investigation and an NTSB inquiry revealed the Dali experienced power issues hours before the incident.

Canada Lowers Immigration Targets to Address Economic Strain
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a reduction in Canada’s immigration targets over the next few years, citing economic strain, housing shortages, and wage stagnation as factors. Starting in 2025, the annual number of permanent residents will drop significantly from the previously planned 500,000 to 395,000. This decision follows an earlier plan to reduce temporary resident numbers, including international students and foreign workers, by nearly 450,000. The federal government expects these measures to ease housing pressure and maintain GDP growth. The opposition Conservatives criticized Trudeau, claiming it reflects a failure in immigration policy amid declining public support.
