Provo River Levees Deemed Outdated and Structurally Compromised

An engineering investigation has revealed that the levee system along the Provo River in Utah is outdated and requires significant upgrades. Some levees date back to the 1800s, with the last updates made in the 1980s. The deteriorating levees are a key factor behind a proposed new flood map, which may require homeowners to obtain flood insurance. The cost of upgrading the levees is estimated between $50-100 million, and the city is seeking state and federal funding to begin construction within a few years.
