Provo Residents Frustrated After Truck Crashes Into Local Yard

Provo residents are frustrated after a truck crashed into a yard on 2200 North, a street they say is unsafe due to increased traffic and speeding. The driver reportedly fell asleep, causing the truck to cross into a yard and hit a fire hydrant. Neighbors have called for traffic calming measures, but the city has yet to address the issue. The city’s master plan proposes widening 2200 North to five lanes, which residents fear will worsen the problem. The city acknowledges the concerns but sees the widening as necessary to accommodate future growth.

Southeastern North Carolina Faces Life-Threatening Flash Flooding

A potential tropical system caused "life-threatening flash flooding" in parts of southeastern North Carolina on Monday, with towns like Carolina Beach and Southport receiving over a foot of rain within 12 hours. This level of rainfall is an event expected only once every 200 years. Despite not being classified as a tropical storm, the system brought significant flash flooding, gusty winds up to 77 mph, and coastal erosion. Local roads were submerged, and the storm is expected to move through the Carolinas until Wednesday, with risks of additional flooding and isolated tornadoes. Some schools in affected areas closed or switched to remote learning.

Master Eiko Araki Preserves the Ancient Craft of Temari in Japan

In Japan, the ancient art of temari, hand-stitched balls with intricate patterns, is being kept alive by dedicated artisans like Eiko Araki. Originating over 1,000 years ago, these decorative balls, made from cotton and rice husks, are valued as heirlooms. Araki’s studio, located on Shikoku island, uses natural dyes to color 140 hues of cotton threads. Though the tradition is at risk due to a lack of successors, modern designs and wider interest are helping the craft evolve, with temari being used in home decor and as Christmas ornaments.
