Accident at Brighton Resort Highlights Early-Season Risks

An accident at Brighton Resort, Utah, highlights the risks associated with early-season skiing. A 17-year-old skier crashed beneath a chair lift on November 25, sustaining a head injury and losing consciousness. Thanks to the quick response of an off-duty paramedic and Ski Patrol, the teenager was revived and transported for medical evaluation. Although Brighton has already received 81 inches of snow this season, early-season conditions remain hazardous due to insufficient snow coverage over rugged terrain. Skiers are urged to stay cautious, adhere to closures, and remain within marked areas to prevent similar incidents.

2024 Hurricane Season: Deadliest Since 2005

The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season ended as the deadliest since 2005, with at least 335 fatalities in the United States. Hurricane Helene, the most devastating storm of the season, claimed at least 241 lives due to wind, flooding, and landslides, making it the deadliest hurricane since Katrina. Vulnerable inland regions such as the Appalachian Mountains saw catastrophic flooding and landslides, with fatalities far from the storm's landfall in Florida. Climate change, particularly warming oceans and increased atmospheric water capacity, contributed to extreme rainfall and storm intensity. Efforts to improve forecasting, flood maps, and evacuation plans are ongoing to mitigate future hurricane risks.
