U.S. Navy Issues Apology to Alaska Native Village for 1882 Destruction

The U.S. Navy issued an apology to the Tlingit people of Angoon, Alaska, for the 1882 bombardment that destroyed their village and inflicted multigenerational trauma. Rear Adm. Mark Sucato, speaking at a ceremony on the 142nd anniversary of the attack, acknowledged the loss of life, cultural resources, and the suffering endured by the community. The attack was prompted by a dispute following the accidental death of a Tlingit shaman, Tith Klane, with the Navy then demanding reparations that the village could not meet. As a result, many villagers, including elders, perished from starvation and exposure during the harsh winter. The apology marks a broader Navy effort to address historic injustices against Alaska Native communities.

Georgian President Seeks International Support After Alleged Election Fraud

Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili called for international support following protests against alleged election fraud favoring the pro-Russia Georgian Dream (GD) party. Claiming the election was manipulated as part of "Russian hybrid warfare," Zourabichvili urged global partners to stand with pro-Western groups committed to a "European future" for Georgia. Despite accusations of vote tampering and voter intimidation, official results awarded GD nearly 54% of the vote, sparking calls for peaceful demonstrations. International observers and U.S. officials noted irregularities, and EU officials called for transparent investigations. Opposition leaders continue to rally, seeing public support as key to drawing attention from the West.

The Dodgers currently lead the series 2-0, and Ohtani’s presence is expected to bolster the team’s already powerful lineup.
