Idaho Judge Rules Death Penalty Viable for Kohberger Trial

Bryan Kohberger, charged with the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students, will face a trial where prosecutors are allowed to seek the death penalty. A judge rejected the defense’s claims that the death penalty is unconstitutional due to execution method issues. Prosecutors argue the crime was particularly cruel, involved multiple victims, and demonstrated a disregard for life. Kohberger’s trial will include DNA, cellphone, and video evidence linking him to the crime, though his defense disputes its validity. The trial was moved to Boise to avoid potential jury bias and ensure fair proceedings.

Australia Proposes Landmark Social Media Ban for Children Under 16

The Australian government has introduced a bill to ban social media for children under 16, targeting platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook but exempting messaging services and educational tools. Backed by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the proposal assigns oversight to the eSafety commission and imposes fines of over $50 million for breaches by social media companies. While exceptions for parental consent are included, the initiative has drawn criticism from the Australian Human Rights Commission, which warns the ban may negatively impact children's rights. The government aims to address social harm caused by these platforms while encouraging responsible use.

Paul George Leaves Game with Left Knee Hyperextension

Paul George exited the 76ers' game against the Grizzlies with a hyper-extended left knee, the same knee he injured in the preseason. Coach Nick Nurse noted the injury appears similar to a previous bone bruise, potentially sidelining George for weeks. This setback disrupts the already struggling 76ers, who dropped to 2-12 after a 117-111 loss to a Memphis team missing Ja Morant. The 76ers' "Big 3," now delayed in gaining on-court chemistry, underscores the challenges facing a team plagued by injuries and poor performance.
