Potential Federal Reserve Rate Cut in September
In July 2024, the U.S. inflation rate fell to 2.9%, the lowest since March 2021, signaling that the post-pandemic surge in prices is easing. The Federal Reserve may consider cutting interest rates in response, with a 25 basis point cut likely in September. Slowed inflation is seen in key categories like groceries, used cars, and airfares, but challenges remain in areas like housing and child care costs. Despite improvements, consumer sentiment remains cautious, with many Americans viewing the economic situation as "poor."

Accidental Distribution of Meth-Laced Candies
In Auckland, New Zealand, a food bank unknowingly distributed methamphetamine-laced candies in its parcels, leading to three hospitalizations. The candies, disguised as pineapple-flavored sweets, contained up to 300 times the typical dose of methamphetamine, posing a lethal risk. Authorities believe the drugs were part of a cross-border smuggling scheme gone wrong. The contaminated candies, branded with the Malaysian label "Rinda," were donated by an unknown individual. The food bank has since recalled the parcels and is working to recover any remaining dangerous sweets.

Heavy Rains Turn Orem Skate Park into a Water Park
Heavy rains on Tuesday transformed the Orem Skate Park into a temporary swimming pool, with skateboarders swapping their boards for surfboards and kayaks. The flooding, caused by an intense afternoon storm, filled the park's bowls with water. The Orem Police Department shared photos of the waterlogged park and humorously commented on social media about the weather event. The rain also led to road and home flooding and quarter-sized hail in various neighborhoods. It's unclear how long the skate park will remain flooded.
