Georgian Parliament Passes Law Restricting LGBTQ Rights Amid Growing Tensions
The Georgian parliament passed a controversial law curbing LGBTQ rights, which restricts Pride events, bans the display of rainbow flags, and censors LGBTQ-related content in books and films. The ruling Georgian Dream party claims the law is meant to protect family values, though critics argue it aims to garner conservative support ahead of the October 2024 parliamentary elections. LGBTQ activists, such as Tbilisi Pride, fear the law will force them to close. While President Salome Zourabichvili opposes the bill, Georgian Dream has enough votes to override her veto.

Zimbabwe and Namibia Announce Elephant Culling Amid Severe Drought
Zimbabwe and Namibia plan to slaughter hundreds of elephants and other wildlife to address food shortages caused by severe drought. Zimbabwe will allow the culling of 200 elephants, primarily in Hwange National Park, where overpopulation has strained resources. Namibia has also approved the killing of over 700 animals, including 83 elephants, to ease human-wildlife competition for food and water. Both governments aim to distribute the meat to hunger-stricken communities. While controversial, experts acknowledge that these measures are driven by the need to balance conservation with urgent humanitarian needs.
