Breakthrough in Water Levitation Technology

Scientists have discovered a method to achieve water droplet levitation at significantly lower temperatures using a surface with microscopic pillars. This breakthrough leverages the Leidenfrost effect, where droplets hover over a cushion of vapor created by surface heat. The micropillars, about 0.08 millimeters high, enhance heat transfer to the droplet, inducing levitation at just 130 degrees Celsius, far lower than the typical 230 degrees Celsius. This advancement holds potential for improved heat transfer applications, such as safer and more efficient cooling in industrial machinery and nuclear power plants.
