IRS Targets Wealthy Tax Evaders with New Guidance
The IRS is set to eliminate a significant tax loophole for wealthy taxpayers known as "partnership basis shifting," aiming to raise over $50 billion in revenue over the next decade. This loophole allows businesses and individuals to move assets among related parties to evade taxes. The initiative is part of a broader effort to target high-wealth tax evaders, enabled by increased IRS funding through the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. Audit rates for large pass-through businesses and complex partnerships are planned to increase substantially by 2026 to curb tax avoidance practices.

China and Philippines Clash Over Ship Collision in Disputed Waters
A collision occurred between a Chinese vessel and a Philippine supply ship near the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, leading to heightened tensions between the two nations. China blamed the Philippines for the incident, accusing the supply ship of ignoring warnings and causing the collision. The Philippines, however, called China's report misleading and defended its actions, stating that the incident occurred within its exclusive economic zone. The U.S. condemned China's actions, supporting the Philippines' stance. The incident underscores the ongoing territorial disputes in the South China Sea, involving multiple countries and posing risks of broader conflict.
