Increased Burglaries in Hobble Creek Canyon Raise Safety Concerns Among Locals

Hobble Creek Canyon in Utah has seen a rise in burglaries this summer, with eight incidents reported, which has made local residents feel unsafe in a previously "trustworthy place." Jenna Vincent, a Springville resident, shared her experience of returning to her familyā€™s trailer to find it vandalized and several personal possessions stolen. Sgt. Spencer Cannon of the Utah County Sheriffā€™s Office acknowledged that criminals often look for "crimes of opportunity" in areas where people leave their belongings unattended. Vincent and other locals are now reconsidering leaving their trailers in the canyon, despite it being legal to leave them on public land for up to two weeks.

Alabama Executes Alan Eugene Miller Using Nitrogen Hypoxia for 1999 Workplace Murders

Alabama executed Alan Eugene Miller using nitrogen hypoxia on Thursday, marking the United States' second use of this execution method. Miller, who was convicted of killing three coworkers in a 1999 shooting spree, died after about 15 minutes of exposure to nitrogen gas at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility. Media witnesses observed Miller shaking for two minutes and gasping for six before being pronounced dead at 6:38 p.m. The execution followed a failed attempt by the state to carry out the death sentence via lethal injection in 2022, leading Miller to pursue execution by nitrogen hypoxia instead. Attorney General Steve Marshall described the shaking as part of the natural dying process. Alabama first employed this method in January to execute Kenneth Smith.

National Trust Launches ā€œTrees of Hopeā€ to Commemorate Sycamore Gap Treeā€™s Legacy

The iconic Sycamore Gap tree, which stood by Hadrianā€™s Wall in northern England and became famous after its appearance in the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, was felled illegally a year ago. To commemorate its loss, the National Trust has launched the ā€œTrees of Hopeā€ initiative, distributing 49 saplingsā€”one for each foot of the treeā€™s heightā€”to communities across the UK. The saplings, to be placed in publicly accessible areas, will also be sent to the countryā€™s 15 national parks and a local primary school. This marks an effort to create a new chapter in the treeā€™s legacy. The initiative coincides with an exhibition opening and the ongoing legal proceedings against the two men charged with cutting down the tree, with trial dates set for December.

His contributions to BYU football remain celebrated, with Jenkins ranked 61st on the list of the top 100 BYU players of all time.
