New York Woman Charged with Hate Crime for Assault on Muslim Uber Driver

Jennifer Guilbeault, 23, has been charged with second- and third-degree assault as a hate crime after allegedly pepper-spraying a Muslim Uber driver in New York while he was praying in Arabic at a red light. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office stated that the attack, which occurred on July 31, was unprovoked and anti-Muslim in nature. Guilbeault was arraigned, pleaded not guilty, and released with conditions pending her next court date in January. The incident reflects a growing trend of anti-Muslim incidents in the U.S., with advocacy groups citing an increase in hate crime reports.

NASA Observes "Halloween Comet" Breaking Apart Near Sun

NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory captured footage of the recently discovered "Halloween comet" (C/2024 S1) breaking into pieces as it neared the sun. The comet, first identified in September by a Hawaiian telescope, disintegrated on Monday as it reached its perihelion, or closest point to the sun, at 7:30 a.m. ET. Despite stargazers’ hopes to view the comet during Halloween week, it did not survive its close approach. This comet belongs to a family of comets that frequently pass close to the sun and sometimes disintegrate due to intense solar heat and gravitational forces.
