Supreme Court Ruling Allows Cities to Ban Homeless Camps

The Supreme Court has ruled 6-3 in favor of allowing cities to enforce bans on homeless camps in public spaces, even when adequate shelter is unavailable, overturning a previous lower court ruling. This decision impacts efforts to manage homelessness amid record numbers of Americans lacking permanent housing. Justice Neil Gorsuch, writing for the majority, emphasized the limited fines and temporary barring orders used by Grants Pass, Oregon, while Justice Sonia Sotomayor, in dissent, argued that criminalizing necessary acts like sleeping is cruel and unconstitutional. The ruling affects numerous municipalities and could influence broader approaches to homelessness.
