Historic Geomagnetic Storm

A historic geomagnetic storm, fueled by a massive sunspot, has brought spectacular displays of the Northern Lights as far south as Florida and Texas. The storm, reaching Level 5 "extreme" conditions, persists with varying intensity, likely until Sunday. This phenomenon, caused by solar flares and Coronal Mass Ejections, strains electrical and satellite infrastructure, causing power grid irregularities and disruptions to communications and GPS. SpaceX's Starlink service experienced degraded service, but Elon Musk reassured that the satellites were holding up. SWPC officials have briefed infrastructure operators to take mitigation efforts. This Level 5 storm is the first of its kind since October 2003, which caused power outages in Sweden and damage to electrical transformers in South Africa.
