Fatal Accident on I-15: Pedestrian Struck While Changing Tire
One person tragically lost their life after being struck by a vehicle while changing a tire on Interstate 15 in Utah County near the American Fork Main Street exit. The driver involved remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Northbound I-15 was partially closed for several hours as Utah Highway Patrol conducted their investigation, leading to significant traffic delays extending into Orem.

Texas National Guardsman Arrested for Smuggling Migrant
A Texas National Guardsman, Savion Johnson, was arrested for allegedly smuggling an illegal immigrant across the southern border. Dashcam footage obtained by Fox News shows the moment of his arrest, with Johnson being dragged out of the vehicle by Texas DPS law enforcement. Texas Governor Greg Abbott's office condemned Johnson's alleged actions, branding him a "traitor and criminal" if the charges are true. The arrest occurred amidst heightened border security efforts under Operation Lone Star, as Texas continues to clash with the Biden administration over its anti-illegal immigration law.
International News
Persistent Global Forest Destruction
Despite significant progress in protecting rainforests, global forest destruction remains high, with wildfires and agricultural expansion offsetting gains made in countries like Brazil and Colombia. The World Resources Institute reported a loss of 9.1 million acres of primary tropical forest in 2023, equivalent to an area almost the size of Switzerland. While this marked a 9% decrease from the previous year, it fell short of halting all forest loss by 2030, as pledged by nations at global climate talks. Record wildfires in Canada and expanding agriculture elsewhere contributed to the continued destruction.

Impact of Cloudy Skies on Eclipse Viewing
Cloudy skies can potentially dampen the experience of viewing a total solar eclipse, but there are still aspects of the event that can be observed even with cloud cover. Patricia Reiff, a veteran eclipse traveler, notes that darkness, temperature drops, changes in wildlife behavior, and thinning clouds during totality can still make for an intriguing experience. While overcast or partly cloudy conditions may thin out as totality approaches, the ability to view the solar corona depends on the extent of cloud cover. Planning ahead and having flexible backup locations can help minimize the risk of encountering cloudy skies during the eclipse.
