South Africa is a significant meth consumer and a transit hub for international drug trafficking due to its geography and trade links.

Discovery of Dark Oxygen Production in the Deep Ocean

Scientists have discovered that metal nodules on the deep ocean floor can produce oxygen in complete darkness by splitting seawater into hydrogen and oxygen. This challenges the long-held belief that oxygen production in the ocean requires sunlight. The discovery, made in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone between Hawaii and Mexico, raises concerns about the environmental impact of proposed deep-sea mining for these metal nodules, which contain valuable metals like lithium, cobalt, and copper. Researchers urge careful consideration of the environmental risks before proceeding with mining activities.
