New Math on the Mat: Potential Changes to High School Wrestling Rules

The National Federation of State High School Associations Wrestling Rules Committee is considering changes for the 2024-25 season, potentially introducing alterations like awarding three points for a takedown and adjusting the scoring for near-falls and out-of-bounds rulings to align more closely with collegiate wrestling rules. These changes aim to increase scoring and excitement in high school wrestling matches. While some coaches see the potential benefits for the sport's growth, others, like NJSIAA Wrestling Tournament Director Howie O’Neil, express reservations, citing a preference for maintaining tradition. Despite differing opinions, the proposed changes could significantly impact the dynamics of high school wrestling matches.
