West Virginia Parents Face Trial for Alleged Child Abuse and Neglect

Jeanne Kay Whitefeather, a West Virginia mother, testified during her trial that allegations of locking two of her adopted teenagers in a shed are false. Whitefeather and her husband, Donald Ray Lantz, face charges including forced labor, child neglect, and civil rights violations. The couple, arrested in October 2023, allegedly mistreated four of their five adopted children, all of whom are Black. Whitefeather claimed the shed was a "teenager hangout," but the eldest child disputed this, testifying she was unaware of access to a key. A detective noted the key was hidden atop a cabinet. The children were reportedly given limited food at set times, while Whitefeather claimed they had access to a refrigerator. Following their arrests, Child Protective Services took custody of the children.

Israel Conducts Major Military Operation in Jenin Refugee Camp

Israel launched a significant military operation, called "Iron Wall," in the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, killing at least seven people, according to Palestinian health officials. This offensive follows a surge in violence during the ongoing Gaza conflict, with over 800 Palestinians reportedly killed in West Bank raids since October 2023. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu described the operation as part of efforts to eliminate terrorism and counter the "Iranian axis." Meanwhile, former President Trump overturned Biden-era sanctions targeting Israeli settlers, signaling a potential shift in U.S. policy toward the occupied territories. Israel’s settlement expansion continues to be a major obstacle to a two-state solution.

Capitals Goalie Distracted by Nachos Thrown on Ice in Edmonton Game

Washington Capitals goalie Logan Thompson was briefly distracted by nachos thrown onto the ice during an NHL game against the Edmonton Oilers, leading to a goal by Corey Perry. Despite the unusual interference, Thompson made 30 saves to help secure a 3-2 win for the Capitals. The incident sparked discussion about Rule 63.5, which governs objects thrown on the ice, though the officials determined the nachos did not impact the play. Capitals coach Spencer Carbery commended Thompson for recovering and preserving the victory, maintaining his exceptional season record of 22-2-3.
