Canada Orders TikTok to Cease Operations Over Security Concerns
The Canadian government has ordered TikTok to close its offices in Canada due to national security and intelligence concerns. The decision, announced by Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne, follows a detailed security review of TikTok's Canadian operations by national security leaders. Champagne emphasized that this action does not block individual Canadians' access to TikTok, but he urged users to consider privacy risks and cybersecurity practices when using social media platforms. TikTok has criticized the decision, arguing that it will harm Canadians by eliminating jobs and plans to appeal the order in court. The government’s move aligns with the Investment Canada Act, which allows scrutiny of foreign investments posing security risks.
